President Biden Signs Social Security Fairness Act into Law

January 9, 2025 – President Joe Biden has signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law, repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). This historic legislation ensures that retired law enforcement officers, along with other public servants, will now receive their full earned Social Security benefits.

The repeal of the WEP and GPO addresses long-standing inequities that reduced Social Security benefits for those with government pensions. Retired law enforcement officers can expect an average monthly increase of $360 due to the WEP repeal and an average monthly increase of $700 for spouses and survivors affected by the GPO repeal.

President Biden emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating, "Americans who have worked hard all their lives to earn an honest living should be able to retire with economic security and dignity."

The Social Security Administration is currently evaluating the implementation of the new law, which is retroactive to January 1, 2024. Beneficiaries can expect to receive back payments for the benefits they missed out on throughout 2024.
